Holy Basil Essential Oil

Price range: £4.95 through £28.95

Description

Holy Basil Essential Oil (Ocimum tenuiflorum / syn. Ocimum sanctum)

Origin: Native to the Indian subcontinent, particularly India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, now also cultivated across Southeast Asia, parts of Africa, and Australia. India is by far the largest producer. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of the holy basil plant, which belongs to the Lamiaceae (mint) family. Also known as Tulsi, holy basil is one of the most sacred plants in Hindu tradition, where it is revered as a manifestation of the goddess Lakshmi. Note that the botanical name Ocimum sanctum has been reclassified as Ocimum tenuiflorum, though the former name remains widely used in the essential oil trade. Holy basil is distinct from sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum), with a very different chemical profile and scent character. It has been valued in Indian aromatic and cultural traditions for thousands of years.

Scent: Warm, spicy, and richly herbaceous with a complex, sweet, clove-like character. Bold and aromatic – there’s a distinctive, sharp, eugenol-rich warmth balanced by a subtle, fresh, green, slightly camphoraceous brightness. Faintly peppery and earthy with a soft, anise-like, balsamic depth. Denser, warmer, and more complex than sweet basil, with a richer, more spicy, almost astringent edge. Full-bodied, vibrant, and long-lasting – a powerful, distinctive herbal scent with extraordinary depth and a warm, sacred quality.

Uses:

  • Valued in natural perfumery as a warm, spicy, herbaceous accent – adds a bold, aromatic, clove-like warmth and unusual complexity to blends
  • A distinctive addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, rich, herbaceous atmosphere to any space
  • Used in candle making and soap crafting for its bold, warm, aromatic character
  • Blends well with frankincense, sandalwood, cedarwood, bergamot, lavender, clove, ginger, rose, vetiver, and citrus oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for herbal, spicy, oriental, and exotic compositions
  • Historically associated with sacred and spiritual traditions in India, valued for its deep, revered aroma
