Description

Australian Sandalwood Essential Oil ( Santalum spicatum )

Origin: Native to Western Australia, primarily found across the semi-arid regions of the state’s wheatbelt, goldfields, and pastoral areas. Australia is now one of the largest producers of sandalwood oil globally. The oil is steam-distilled from the heartwood and roots of the Australian sandalwood tree, which belongs to the Santalaceae (sandalwood) family. Like all sandalwoods, Santalum spicatum is a slow-growing, semi-parasitic tree that takes many years to develop sufficient heartwood for oil production. It is distinct from Indian sandalwood ( Santalum album ), Hawaiian sandalwood ( Santalum paniculatum ), and other sandalwood species, with its own unique scent profile and chemical composition. Australian sandalwood has a well-established and sustainably managed industry, with harvesting regulated by the Western Australian government. It has gained increasing recognition in international perfumery as a high-quality, sustainable alternative to Indian sandalwood.

Scent: Warm, soft, and sweetly woody with a dry, earthy, slightly smoky character. Smooth and rounded – there’s a distinctive, clean, woody warmth balanced by a subtle, nutty, slightly bitter depth. Faintly resinous and balsamic with a gentle, musky, almost hay-like undertone. Drier, lighter, and more austere than Indian sandalwood, with less of the creamy, buttery richness but a distinctive, clean, quiet elegance of its own. Grounding, understated, and long-lasting – a refined, versatile wood scent with a distinctive Australian character.

Uses:

  • Valued in natural perfumery as a warm, dry, woody base – adds clean, smooth, woody depth and longevity to blends
  • A beautiful addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, serene, grounding atmosphere to any space
  • Widely used in candle making and soap crafting for its smooth, classic, woody character
  • Blends beautifully with rose, jasmine, bergamot, frankincense, vetiver, patchouli, lavender, ylang ylang, cedarwood, and vanilla oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for woody, oriental, floral, and contemporary compositions
  • A sustainable alternative to Indian sandalwood, with its own distinctive, drier, more austere character
  • Sandalwood has been historically associated with meditation and contemplative practices across many cultures, from ancient times to the present day, valued for its warm, grounding aroma
