Cedar of Lebanon Essential Oil — Cedrus libani | Warm Creamy Woody | Turkey
Price range: £5.85 through £180.00
Description
Cedar of Lebanon Pure Essential Oil — Cedrus libani — is one of the oldest and most historically significant natural perfumery materials in the world. The cedars of Lebanon have been revered for over four thousand years, mentioned throughout the Bible and ancient Egyptian, Phoenician, and Assyrian texts, prized for temple construction, sacred anointing oils, and embalming. The remaining ancient groves in Lebanon are now legally protected and cannot be felled, which is why genuine Lebanon cedarwood oil available today is typically distilled from sustainably managed trees grown in Turkey and Cyprus, where the same species thrives.
Steam distilled from the wood, this oil is warm, creamy, and softly spicy — a character genuinely distinct from the more familiar Texas, Virginian, or Atlas cedarwoods. Much of what is sold under the name “Lebanon cedarwood oil” is in fact Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica), which lacks the true creaminess that defines authentic Cedrus libani. This oil is genuinely sourced from the correct species, distilled in Turkey to the highest standard.
Scent Profile
Warm and creamy with a soft, rounded woody character quite unlike other cedarwoods — slightly spicy and dusty, with a resemblance to frankincense that gives it an ancient, almost sacred quality. Where Texas and Virginian cedarwood read as dry and pencil-shaving-like, Cedar of Lebanon has a gentle, enveloping warmth that makes it an outstanding base note in classical and contemporary compositions alike.
Perfumery Applications
A superb base note for woody, oriental, and masculine compositions, and equally valuable as a naturalising background material in florals and chypres. Its creamy warmth blends particularly well with resinous and balsamic materials, adding depth and roundness without the drier, sharper edge of other cedarwoods. Widely used historically as an anointing oil, blended with other sacred materials — a tradition that continues to inform its use in contemporary natural perfumery.
Blending Suggestions
Blends beautifully with frankincense, myrrh, labdanum, benzoin, rose, jasmine, sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli, bergamot, and orange blossom.
