Description
Galbanum Essential OilÂ
Botanical name: Ferula galbaniflua
Native to Persia and other parts of the Middle East. This oil is steam-distilled from the resin (oleoresin) of the plant, which belongs to the Apiaceae (carrot/parsley) family. Galbanum has been prized since ancient times — it was one of the sacred incense ingredients mentioned in historical texts and has been used in perfumery for centuries.
Scent: Intensely green, earthy, and herbaceous with a sharp, almost biting freshness. It opens with a striking leafy, sap-like quality – sometimes compared to crushed green stems or freshly cut peppers. Beneath this there’s a warm, balsamic, slightly woody depth. Complex and distinctive, it’s an acquired taste but highly valued in fragrance blending.
Uses:
- Widely used in perfumery as a green, earthy accent – pairs well with florals, woods, and other resins
- A valued addition to diffuser blends, adding depth and an unusual green character
- Popular in natural perfume making and artisan fragrance crafting
- Used in candle and soap making for its distinctive, sophisticated scent profile
- Blends well with lavender, frankincense, cedarwood, rose, geranium, and other citrus oils
