Peru Balsam Absolute (Myroxylon balsamum var. pereirae)

Origin: Native to Central America, this absolute is solvent-extracted from the crude balsam resin, which is obtained by making incisions in the bark of the balsam tree. The tree belongs to the Fabaceae (legume) family. Peru balsam takes its name from the historical trade route through Peru, despite not actually originating there. The absolute retains a fuller, richer, more complex scent profile than the steam-distilled essential oil, capturing a broader range of aromatic compounds from the crude resin. The resin has been used in aromatic traditions for centuries across Central American cultures and has a long-established place in European perfumery since the Spanish colonial era. It remains a valued and widely used material in both fine and artisan fragrance work.

Scent: Rich, warm, and deeply balsamic with a sweet, vanilla-like, resinous character. Dense and velvety – there’s a distinctive, soft, cinnamon-like warmth layered with a smooth, caramel-like sweetness. Subtly smoky and slightly spicy with a faint, woody, cocoa-like depth. Richer, heavier, and more complex than the steam-distilled essential oil, with a deeper, more rounded, more opulent quality. Heavy, enveloping, and extraordinarily long-lasting – a luxurious, indulgent, gourmand scent with remarkable tenacity and warmth. One of the richest, sweetest, and most tenacious balsamic materials available in perfumery.

Uses:

• Highly valued in natural perfumery as a rich, warm, balsamic base – adds extraordinary depth, sweetness, and longevity to blends

• This is a solvent-extracted absolute, not a steam-distilled essential oil – Peru balsam is also available as a crude balsam and as a steam-distilled essential oil, each with different characteristics
• Peru balsam is a well-known skin sensitiser – always use sparingly and dilute well with a suitable carrier oil before applying to skin
• Peru balsam absolute may be thick, viscous, or dark in colour – this is normal and does not indicate a quality issue. Gently warming the bottle will improve pourability
• Consult a qualified professional before use if pregnant or nursing
